Grizzly. Fucking. Bears.

I’ve been slacking. I know. Real life has been far too busy kicking my ass too and fro to allow me any decent time to get some musical mayhem organized.

But thanks to one of the most bad ass mammals to ever roam the woods, I’ve got some killer tunes to take real life and curb stomp it’s pretty little face into a bloody mishmash. Grizzly are a sludge ‘n’ roll band from Budapest. Their first EP, “Fear My Wrath”, was released on the 25th of June and hits just as hard as their brown-haired namesake.

“The Cultist” claws open the gates with a thundering combination of distorted sludge riffs, careening baselines and knife edged vocals that takes a hardcore edge and puts some rust on it. The music is filthy, dark and abrasive. It’s a 12 foot tall king of the forest, with teeth still red from the kill and fur matted with gore from a thousand victims.

I called it sludge ‘n’ roll before but I’m almost tempting to call it sludgecore. The guitars, distortion and grooves are all ripped straight from the darkest dungeons of sludge, while the vocals howl at you with a fury and vengeance that is almost always found in hardcore. It’s a damn tasty combination that will keep your head nodding and the pit moving.

The hardcore influences also seem to have seeped into some of the riffs. There’s plenty of variety and plus-sized groove sections that set them apart from other sticky rivers of sludge. It’s faster, meaner and leaner. If traditional sludge is the one-eyed grey hair male prowling the mountain tops, Grizzly is the new alpha, with a taste for blood and a satanic glint in it’s eye.

The music has a slight searing of southern swagger, present in the monster sized riff and bass work. Another part that stands out to me is that the bass is clearly defined in the mix, letting you actually hear it smash it’s way through the background instead of getting lost in guitar/drum steamroller.

“Fear My Wrath” is an awesome and refreshing new take on the style, bringing a blast of energy and aggression into the field. Even better than that is the fact it’s motherfucking FREE on Bandcamp.

Does a bear shit in the woods? Probably, but it sure as fuck would disembowel you to this album.
