METAL MONDAY: Musical Hodgepodge

Shit. Late again. Well, remember that midnight is still my evening so it’s still technically my Monday. Either way.

There’s been a whole crapload of excellent big-budget metal release these past couple weeks so I’m going to share three of these new releases in short blurb form.

Ready. GO!

Meshuggah – Koloss

If you listen to metal and you don’t know who Meshuggah are or weren’t excited for this new release, then there really is no hope for you. Koloss is a return to roots of sorts for these titans of metal. The grooves are still absolutely shattering but the whole things feels much more organic and a great deal simpler. It brings to mind a tribal war anthem, filling the warriors with blood lust as they prepare to rape, pillage and murder the weak and unsuspecting. This album is a must listen.

Naglfar – Teras

In Norse mythology the Naglfar is a boat made entirely of the fingernails and toenails of the dead. It’s sole purpose is to ferry the hordes of demons across the seas to battle the Gods. Metal as fuck and we haven’t even got to the music. These Swedish black metallers newest album Teras, is packed full of classic melodic black metal fare. The hooks are truly infernal, the vocals suitably blackened and the melodies spawned from the darkest regions of the underworld. Really everything you could want for those evil days.

Spawn of Possession – Incurso

And finally we have what might be the tech-death album of the year (Unless Gorod pulls some craaaaazy shit). If the former members of Necrophagist didn’t already get you excited for this, you probably haven’t heard Necrophagist. Incurso shows the world that you can still have your skin-blistering guitar work and still make actual songs, that sound like songs. Everything is completely on point, from the frenetic shredding to the equally insane drum work, this album is relentless in it’s light speed execution. Tech-death done right.
