Nothing like being back on a school schedule to turn your life into a sad, damp sponge of overdue assignments other mediocrities. But I digress.
Sorceress are a band hailing from Welland, Ontario. They seem to have been doing well and released one tight 4 track demo last May. Sadly it seems they are now defunct with a Facebook page that was last active August (Not that Facebook is the be all and end all of a bands existence, but it’s a pretty good cue.). I’m really quite suprised that they aren’t still pushing this band as their demo is a well polished and executed example of solid post-metal.
Bringing parts in from post-metal, progressive and sludge to help define their sound, Sorceress provide a suitable heavy batch of riffs that complement the more somber tone of the songs. The demo opens with the words of the infamous Conan the Barbarian describing his love for the “lamentation of the women”. Thick guitar tones with a tasty dusting of crunch lead into a great display of musicianship with sludge as the diving board.
“Glaive” and “Glacier” make up the meat of this demo-sandwich. Both stray more into the traditional post-metal landscape, with the more aggressive riffs being traded in for more emotionally charged melodies. “Last Jam” closes out the demo with a southern tinged blast of bluesy solo’s and meaty backing riffs. There is some serious shredding packed into the 4 minute track.
All in all the Sorceress Demo is really damn good and it’s a shame to not have any other releases from these guys. It’s up for $1 on Bandcamp so you can decide if you want to spend that golden loonie on a cheap cup of coffee or some damn fine tunes. (It should be a no-brainer)
